Types of Claims

Inconvenience claim

An inconvenience claim can be filed if the moving company:

• Fails to pick up your shipment on the agreed upon date,
• Fails to deliver on or before the required delivery date (RDD), as long as you have possession of your home, or
• Fails to deliver your shipment out of storage within 7 days of the date you first contacted them requesting delivery, or within 2 business days if the requested date is more than 7 government business days in advance.

For moves on or after May 15, 2026, payment is 100% of the meals and incidentals per diem for the service member, and 75% of the meals and incidentals per diem for each dependent regardless of age. You receive the payment for each day of the inconvenience. The per diem rate is set by the locality rate.

Essential items claim

• Essential items are things like a mattress, washer, dryer, fridge or freezer, and needed medical equipment.
• Notify your moving company within 7 days of delivery.
• They must make arrangements within 2 business days of your notification.

Quick claim

• Up to $2,000 total per shipment.
• Only available if your moving company offers it on delivery day.
• Payment is made within 5 calendar days of delivery.

Regular household goods claim

• For shipments picked up on or after May 15, 2026, you have 12 months to file your claim. Shipments picked up on or before May 14, 2026 have 9 months.
• The moving company has 60 days to make an offer.
• They have 7 days to respond to each rebuttal.

Real property damage

For damage to your home itself, like walls, floors, doors or railings. Notify your moving company directly within 7 days of pick up or delivery.

Military Claims Office (MCO)

If you and the moving company cannot agree, you can transfer your claim to the MCO. The MCO pays a depreciated value, not full replacement value.
