Being Respectful, Kind, and Setting an Example
Why playing the system hurts every military family, and how kindness changes the move.
We NEVER encourage playing the system by any means, and we always expect everyone in our community to treat others with kindness.
Here’s the deal: when someone in our military and military spouse community tries to circumvent the process or the regulations, plays the system, or treats the crews in their home like crap, they are ruining it for everyone.
Playing the system
When people play the system, we all end up with more regulations and policies, and less wiggle room. We could all agree that they should give us a million dollars and a brand new car every time we PCS, but trying to play the system to get two new cars just means no one gets a new car.
This applies to every aspect of a PCS. Just don’t do it.
- If your PPM weight seems suspicious, the transportation office will investigate it and can take action against you.
- Moving companies can pull your previous claim history to see if you are claiming the same things or filing the same super large claim every time.
How you treat people matters
When you yell, scream and belittle the crew in your home, you are showing that crew that this is how all military families are. You are showing that first-time packer, or the driver who normally does civilian or corporate moves, that we are a bunch of unhinged heathens.
They are people too.
We work hard in this space to change the narrative of how our community works with the moving industry. I hate having to say, “I like to believe we are reasonable people, but I know we have some bad apples like every community and industry does.” If we want to improve this experience, we have to work together and show them kindness and reasonableness.
So when people are in your home and you are having issues, you can ask them to stop, and you can call your move coordinator, local transportation office, JPPSO, or even me for help. But treat them with the kindness and respect that any person deserves.
It’s like the rule with a fight: you make the other person throw the first punch. The same thing applies here. Be kind, respectful and reasonable unless they raise their voice and yell first.
We are all people. Life is hard enough. Be the kindness that someone may need that day.
Remember: moving and fraud are not good reasons for jail. It costs nothing to be kind.
